Spotlight: CS graduate begins PhD program at Oregon State University
Alex Barajas-Ritchie graduates SSU with the class of 2021 this weekend, and will soon begin his graduate studies in the Electrical & Computer Engineering
department at Oregon State University. Alex is joining the research lab of Dr. Eduardo Cotilla-Sanchez to work on topics related to his interests in environmental data science, sustainability, energy systems, and remote sensing. Alex's research work in the McNair's program was on using quantitative susceptibility mapping to estimate redwood biomass, under the direction of Dr. Lisa Bentley. When asked what he valued most about his time at SSU, Alex shared:
I truly valued the time and support MESA, McNair, and my professors gave me. Without their support and encouragement, I wouldn't be the student/researcher/coder I am today. I'm incredibly thankful for all the people who believed in me and allowed me to make mistakes and grow.

Thank you to Alex for his service and contributions to Sonoma State—as a MESA tutor, the president of the CS Club, and as a generous student-scholar. We wish Alex well in his exciting journey, and hope he will come back to SSU to present his research!
